Environmental Engineering is a branch of engineering that, unlike other engineering disciplines focused on using natural resources and creating suitable environmental conditions for human health, aims to return what it has to nature rather than consuming nature's resources. Environmental engineers' main fields of work include water and wastewater treatment, air pollution control, solid waste disposal, and soil contamination.
The Department of Environmental Engineering was established in 2004 and has provided graduate-level education in Turkish since the 2006-2007 academic year. Undergraduate education in Environmental Engineering commenced in the 2007-2008 academic year. As of the 2012-2013 academic year, the department transitioned to 100% English education at the undergraduate level. Since the Spring Semester of 2017-2018, the Doctoral Program has been conducted in 100% English.
The Association accredited our department for Evaluation and Accreditation of Engineering Programs (MÜDEK) between May 1, 2019, and September 30, 2025. The diploma of ÇOMÜ Environmental Engineering Department has earned the right to bear the logos of the Turkish Qualifications Framework (TYÇ) and the European Qualifications Framework (AYÇ).
Our department boasts a diverse and highly qualified faculty of 4 Professors, 1 Associate Professor, 1 Assistant Professor, 1 Research Assistant with a PhD, and 2 Research Assistants. This team of experts is dedicated to educating future Environmental Engineers who will contribute to solving the country's current environmental issues. Our curriculum covers a wide range of areas, including water and wastewater pollution and control, solid wastes, urbanization and its associated environmental problems, the provision of healthy and quality drinking water, wastewater treatment, marine pollution, noise pollution, air pollution and control, and hazardous waste disposal.
